Emergency Assistance Programs

American Cancer Society-Patient Assistance Program
Provides financial assistance for commercial transportation for cancer patients. Emergency funds are available ($300 per year for two years) for nausea and pain medications. The program also makes referrals to other organizations if equipment is needed.

Coalition for Compassion
Non-profit interfaith group that coordinates the religious community’s response to emergency needs such as food, eviction prevention, etc. Operates Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Community Action Council
Nonprofit human/social services organization that serves low-income Howard County residents. Programs include food bank, energy and eviction prevention and other crisis intervention services. Operates Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

FISH of Howard County
Volunteers provide short-term assistance for those in need of resources such as food, transportation and referral to social services. Please call for operation hours as times vary.

Food Stamp Program
Provides information about food stamps and other income assistance programs as well as temporary cash, medical assistance and food stamps. Takes applications on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8-11a.m.

Howard County Dept. of Social Services
Provides comprehensive social services for Howard County residents. Operates Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Child support concerns are addressed from 1:30-3:30 p.m..

Howard County Food Bank
Provides emergency food assistance for households referred or certified by an authorized source or agency. Operates Monday-Friday, 8 a.m-4 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday, 1-4 p.m. for food distribution.

Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services
Nonprofit organization that provides crisis services for anyone in the Laurel/Greater Laurel area. Operates Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9a.m.-2p.m. and Monday 6:30-9:00 p.m.

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland Inc.
Volunteer agency that delivers two meals a day, Monday-Friday, between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to homebound individuals of any age or economic status who are unable to shop and/or prepare meals because of illness, injury, recuperation from surgery, disability or degenerative condition. Sliding fee scale. Office hours 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Handles Howard, Prince George's and Montgomery counties as well as Laurel.
