Columbia, MD – The State of Maryland has granted $250,000 to Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine for a new 19-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) to help meet the hospital’s demand for critical, non-Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds. Currently, the ICU is often at capacity often with patients who could be moved to a lower level of care.
The new unit will be located on the third floor of the existing hospital building and will be part of a single-floor continuum of care model. The most critically ill patients will be cared for in the ICU and more stable but critical patients can be admitted or moved to the PCU. Less critically ill patients will receive care on the Intermediate Care Unit.
When renovation of the hospital’s third floor is completed in spring 2010, the entire floor will be dedicated to caring for critically ill patients who will be able to move among the units as their care needs change during the recovery process.
