Columbia, MD – Rising Hope at Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine received a grant in the amount of $19,950 from the Horizon Foundation to support one year of the Perinatal Hospice Program, from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

The Rising Hope Perinatal Hospice Program offers support during and after pregnancy, to families that choose to continue their pregnancy after learning their baby has a fatal condition. Services are free and include emotional support, helping with a plan of care, creating memories with photographs and other mementos, resources for spiritual support, funeral planning resources, support groups and an annual “Walk to Remember” as part of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

Rising Hope is a family-centered program and its multi-disciplinary team includes obstetricians, perinatologists, labor and delivery nurses, neonatologists, neonatal intensive care staff, chaplains, social workers, genetic counselors, therapists and traditional hospice professionals. It provides palliative and hospice care to help parents adjust to the reality of their infant’s mortality while honoring his or her life.

The Horizon Foundation, Howard County’s largest philanthropy, addresses community health issues through a strategic grants program and partnerships with private and public institutions. As a community health foundation, it takes a broad view of health and wellness and is committed to helping build a healthy and resilient community in Howard County.
