Bone densitometry is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone density loss. Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) and bone loss. DEXA measurements are most often performed on the lower spine, hips and wrist while the patient lies on their back for the screening examination.
Do not take calcium supplements the day of the exam. No recent (within 72 hours) barium or nuclear medicine scans.
Please wear clothing that does not have metal buttons or zippers in the area of the pelvis and hip as they may prevent clear imaging of these areas.
