A “hospitalist” is a physician whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized
patients. Because they do not see patients in an office outside of the hospital, hospitalists can devote their time to taking care of inpatients’ needs. Experienced in the unique aspects of inpatient medicine, hospitalists employ a multidisciplinary approach by working with case managers, social workers and nurses to assist in your care and address needs at discharge.
A hospitalist will see you every day while you are in the hospital to direct your treatment, answer questions and provide 24-hour coverage to attend to any emergencies that might arise. Because the hospitalists work as a team, you may see more than one hospitalist during your stay and they may consult other doctors to participate in your care. The team includes a physician’s assistant who supports the physicians and facilitates the delivery of care. Hospitalists are readily available for personal discussions or family meetings so you and your family won’t have to worry about missing your regular doctor during his or her rounds.
Our hospitalists will communicate with your primary care doctor during your stay and can keep him/her involved in decisions about your care. At discharge, the hospitalist will arrange for prescriptions you may need at home and will advise you to make a follow-up appointment with your primary care doctor. If you don’t have a regular primary care doctor, the hospitalist can help you to find one and have records from your hospital stay sent to that physician.
