Adults: All prospective volunteers must complete a volunteer application, and provide three personal references (non-relatives).
Students: Students under the age of 18 who have not yet completed high school must submit a special volunteer packet that includes a Parental Consent and Guidance Counselor forms. The packet can be obtained from the information desk in the main hospital lobby, or by calling Volunteer Services at 410-884-4580 and providing your mailing address. Only those students willing to work a minimum of 75 hours over the Fall/Winter semester or 40 hours (i.e., 10 weeks) during the summer semester will be considered.
Health-Related Documentation (required for all positions inside the hospital and The Center for Ambulatory Surgery)
- All volunteers are tested for tuberculosis and must be determined to be free of active infection before they are allowed to begin working in the hospital. Tuberculin skin tests (PPD) are administered through the hospital's Employee Health Department and must be evaluated within 48 to 72 hours. Any volunteer with a positive reaction to the PPD test who is advised to follow up with a chest X-ray must do so within 15 days to be considered for the program.
- Additionally, all volunteers born after January 1, 1957, must provide documentation that they have had at least one measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine. Volunteers working in certain departments must provide documentation of MMR immunity regardless of age.

Number of Hours Required:
Most volunteer positions are four hours long on the assigned day once a week.Volunteers are scheduled to work the same day and time each week. Those applicants who are willing to work a minimum of 100 hours over a eight-month period are considered.
Attendance:
Volunteers are expected to meet their commitments to their scheduled work hours. The Volunteer Services office must be notified in advance of all absences, and three consecutive absences without notification will result in termination of a volunteer assignment.
Orientation & Training
Prospective volunteers will be interviewed and invited to attend the new volunteer orientation (held monthly). Volunteers who wish to work in patient care units must attend a patient care class.
Placement / Further Training
Based on the interview and completeness of all required forms and classes, volunteers are given assignments and are provided with an identification badge. Volunteers are asked to purchase a uniform jacket. At that time, further training with veteran volunteers and/or staff members is arranged.
